STS-98 payload U.S. Lab Destiny is moved into Atlantis' payload bay

  • Description: KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, Fla. -- Workers check out the U.S. Lab Destiny after it has been installed in Atlantis’ payload bay at the pad. Destiny, a key element in the construction of the International Space Station, is 28 feet long and weighs 16 tons. This research and command-and- control center is the most sophisticated and versatile space laboratory ever built. It will ultimately house a total of 23 experiment racks for crew support and scientific research. STS-98 is the seventh construction flight to the ISS. Launch of STS-98 is scheduled for Jan. 19 at 2:11 a.m. EST. (Photo Release Date: 06-Jan-2001 )
