  • Description: A newly arrived external tank begins the turn on the road leading to the Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB), seen behind the tank. Seated in his perch near the rear left wheels is the transporter driver. The tank will be moved through the open door (facing the tank) into the main transfer aisle. From there it will be moved to one of the high bays and await stacking for a future Shuttle mission. External tanks are built by the NASA Michoud Assembly Facility in New Orleans and transported by barge to Cape Canaveral and then up the Banana River to the turn basin in the Launch Complex 39 Area.
