  • Description: With her historic six-month stay aboard the Russian Space Station Mir completed, U.S. astronaut Shannon W. Lucid accepts a congratulatory phone call from President Bill Clinton. Lucid's on-orbit journey began March 22, when she embarked to Mir with the crew of Mission STS-76 aboard the Space Shuttle Atlantis. By the time she returned to Earth earlier today, again aboard Atlantis but with the crew of Mission STS-79, she had logged 188 days in space: a U.S. record for long-duration human spaceflight as well as the longest stay in space by a woman. Lucid and her five fellow STS-79 crew members are spending the night here in the Operations and Checkout Building before returning to Johnson Space Center in Houston. Atlantis touched down on Runway 15 of KSC's Shuttle Landing Facility at 8:13:15 a.m. EDT.
