MARS PATHFINDER CAMERA TEST IN SAEF-2

[KSC-96PC-1065]

  • Photo Number: KSC-96PC-1065

  • Release Date: 12-Sep-1996

  • Description: In the Spacecraft Assembly and Encapsulation Facility-2 (SAEF-2), Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) workers Lorraine Garcia (left) and Larry Broms keep a close eye on the Mars Pathfinder imager as a systems check of the specially designed camera is performed. The white, cylindrically-shaped imager is mounted on an extendable mast atop the Pathfinder lander. After the lander touches down on the surface of Mars, the mast will be extended to provide the imager with a better view of the landing site. The imager was developed by a team led by the University of Arizona. It features a stereo-imaging system with color capability provided by a set of selectable filters for each of the two camera channels. The images it will gather will help researchers better understand the soil composition on Mars. Data about the Martian atmosphere will be gathered using the filters. The Mars Pathfinder is being prepared for launch aboard a Delta II expendable launch vehicle Dec. 2. JPL manages the Pathfinder project for NASA.
