Description:
Pioneer Venus-A atop Atlas Centaur-50 stands poised for launch on Complex 36's Pad A at Cape Canaveral following rollback of the service structure. To be renamed Pioneer Venus 1 following launch, the spacecraft is scheduled to reach Venus and enter an orbit around the planet on December 4. From that vantage point the spacecraft will investigate phenomena of Venus' upper atmosphere and relay back to Earth data obtained by the bus and probes of a companion spacecraft, Pioneer Venus 2, that will enter the Venusian atmosphere to obtain readings at all levels down to the surface. Launch is scheduled today during an opportunity extending from 9:13 to 9:28 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time. Launch will be by the Kennedy Space Center's Expendable Vehicles Directorate.
