Description:
KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FL - Skylab 2 astronauts Charles Conrad, Jr., Dr. Joseph P. Kerwin and Paul J. Weitz lifted off aboard the Saturn IB rocket from Complex 39B at 9:00 a.m. EDT on May 25, 1973. They are scheduled to rendezvous and dock their spacecraft with Skylab, America's first space station, launched to Earth orbit May 14. The astronauts will be flying a revised mission since one of the Orbital Workshop's solar arrays did not deploy. They are scheduled to deploy a parasol thermal shield to cool onboard temperatures, but will carry other types of sun shades which can be used if it is determined the original method is unsatisfactory. Also, they will take aloft tools which might be used to free the undeployed solar array during a stand-up extravehicular activity. If all goes well, the astronauts are expected to remain aloft 28 days, living and working in the spacious Orbital Workshop. They will return to Earth in the command module which carried them to Skylab, splashing down in the Eastern Pacific Ocean about 800 miles southwest of San Diego, California. Two additional manned visits to Skylab-each spanning 56 days-are planned for August and November. NASA directs the Skylab program, which is designed to gain new knowledge in space for improving life on Earth.
