Pioneer 11 began its long journey to Jupiter with launch by Atlas-Centaur 30 from Complex 36 at Cape Kennedy at 9:11 p.m. EST today. Pioneer 11 joins Pioneer 10 - launched by KSC's Unmanned Launch Operations Directorate 13 months ago - on man's first missions of exploration to the solar system's largest planet. Flight time to Jupiter is nearly two years. The Pioneer Program is managed by Ames Research Center.
