APOLLO 11 MATING OF SATURN V STAGE 1

An overhead crane lifts the Saturn V first stage for the Apollo 11 mission from the transfer aisle floor in preparation for stacking on a mobile launcher within the Vehicle Assembly Building's High Bay #1. The 138-foot-long first stage will generate a liftoff thrust of 7.7 million pounds when it launches astronauts Neil A. Armstrong, Michael Collins and Edwin E. Aldrin, Jr. on a planned lunar landing mission. Armstrong and Aldrin are to descent to the moon's surface in a lunar module spacecraft. The fully assembled Saturn V space vehicle is called Apollo/Saturn 506. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration directs the Apollo Program.
